Caterpillar is by far the world's largest construction, mining, agricultural and industrial equipment manufacturer, producing more than 300 different machine lines. Based in Peoria, North America, Cat has manufacturing plants across the world, including backhoe loader and mini excavator facilities in Desford, Leicestershire and articulated dump truck manufacturing in Peterlee, County Durham.
The company offers a full line of machinery, from compact loaders, skid steers, backhoes and mini excavators, to heavy quarrying shovels, dozers, excavators, rigid and articulated dump trucks. Caterpillar also has a growing presence in the road building business, with compactors, pavers and planning equipment.
Caterpillar also supplies a wide range of work tools, designed to function with both Cat machinery and other makes of plant.
Caterpillar is also a leading player in the diesel engine market, both through its own Cat Power engine line and through ownership of UK manufacturer Perkins Engines. Caterpillar has distributors in more than 200 countries, many of which run Cat Rental Stores, where customers can hire equipment as well as buy. These dealers are supported by Cat Financial, which offers financial services in more than 80 countries.
Cat equipment is recognised around the world and generally commands high residual values. Remanufactured machinery is also available through many of the firm's dealers. Caterpillar equipment, spare parts and service are available in England, Wales and Scotland through Finning (UK), which has 19 depots. Customers in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland are covered by McCormick Macnaughton's three outlets. All dealers offer a full range of new and used machinery.
